Trust me, I sympathize. My former roomates couldn't seem to grasp the idea of turing off the DVD player (or GameCube or PS2...) rather than leaving it constantly cycling through the menu screen of whatever they'd been watching. Yet they still seemed surprised when the appliances began to show signs of wear sooner than expected.
I tend to switch things off when I've finished with them. Admittedly, this is a result of growing up in a household where my mother couldn't stand having the television left on (or the radio, or indeed anything else). We learned to switch things off in deference to Mum's desire for peace and quiet - if she didn't get it, she made sure we didn't either.
