Why is it that "turn the freaking DVD player off after watching a movie" seems to be a skill that only I, among the many people I know, possess?

Trust me, I sympathize. My former roomates couldn't seem to grasp the idea of turing off the DVD player (or GameCube or PS2...) rather than leaving it constantly cycling through the menu screen of whatever they'd been watching. Yet they still seemed surprised when the appliances began to show signs of wear sooner than expected.
