Magazines

I'm considering suggesting to people they buy me some magazine subscriptions as gifts, 'cause there's not a whole lot I want, and it'd make sure I have more sources of information besides just piping the Internet directly to my brain.

The question is, which magazines would be worth getting? The list I'm considering so far is Fortean Times, Adbusters, and New Scientist. What other good magazines are out there with info about all sorts of interesting things?

I haven't read it, but in a friendslocked post [livejournal.com profile] revme rates Adbusters poorly, because it gets shrill and because its founder, Kalle Lasn, "is a COMPLETE and UTTER twit" who advocates harassing the poor people working the registers at McDonalds about the horrible practices of the corporation, as if that's going to do anything but annoy someone and make them feel worse about their crappy job. Also, "It seems that Stay Free! magazine seems to be doing the same kinda stuff that Adbusters is, but not quite as broken/douchebaggy."

And if you'd rather have a firsthand recommendation, Make is fun to go through, even if you don't intend to build tiny robots or whatever.

Popular Science. I don't care what anyone says, some of the neatest crap I've learned about technology has come out of that magazine.

Fortean Times? Seriously?

I dunno, I'm curious. I could just go for the Weekly World News for my quota of "Crazy Shit".

They've raised the price on WWN. $3 is more than I think it's worth since they dont' seem to keeping very good tabs on the Bat Boy anymore. YMMV.

Hello. I followed you from Matt's L-J.

If you want something that is a little food for the brain, you might try Oxford American. It is a Southern magazine published in Mississippi. NOT a Southern Living variation. Their annual music issue alone is worth the price.
