A semi-hypothetical question

Assuming modern USA setting, and a character who's just ordinary, not military trained or anything, what kind of adventuring kit would you have them pack? Like the eleven foot pole and sixty feet of rope of D&D fame. Stuff that'd be needed often and would fit in a backpack or other not-huge bag, for travelling and suchlike. I have some ideas, but I know there's plenty of gamers out there, so suggestions are open.

Hm... flashlight, rope and grappling hook, laptop, pencil and paper, cell phone, lockpicks, swiss army knife, a lighter, and a mirror, among other things.

And extra socks. Even if you only wear sandals.

And a book on lockpicking, then? Heh.

No no, all you need is to have a help file on it on the laptop. It'd work perfectly!
....in theory.

Leatherman, a towel, string, everything listed above, a lock back knife (legal length of course) small camera, work gloves, and, uhm, minor munchies that are not easily crushed.

Well, my list so far had things like toiletry kit, good watch, maps, compass, water bottle and some other stuff. Most of the US for traveling is relatively civilized. Heh.

you know, I carry around all the stuff I listed specifically, if not on me, in my trunk, Douglas Adams was right, a towel is that useful.

Definitely can't, I keep one in my trunk at all times, and use it, cleans windshields, provides a layer of padding between lumber and roof of car, Douglas was right
