So, this guy waterboards himself to see if it's torture. Hilarity does not ensure. He doesn't die, either.

"...but you really can't get worse than infinite and total surrender and panic, and that's what it felt like.

As someone who nearly drowned last summer after getting disoriented in the deep end of the family pool, I know exactly what this guy is talking about. Aside from the burning in your lungs when you try to hold your breath while your muscles continue to draw oxygen, it doesn't hurt. It's more of an "Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck" sensation of your brain realizing that you might be dying. You get to a point right before you take water into your lungs, where you utterly flip out physically and mentally, and every perception of what life is just flies from you. Even the muffled sensory input you get underwater makes no damn sense, and doesn't seem to matter.

From this guy's description, the goal of waterboarding seems to be to draw out this experience in its subjects, without actually being a threat on their lives. It was a pretty traumatic experience for me, one which still affects me sometimes. I know that if I hadn't hit my arm on the side of the pool and thereby discovered where I was, I would be dead. I would have died if I had taken water into my lungs, since my brother, the only one there at the time, is not trained in CPR.
