"So-called "global warming" is just a secret ploy by wacko tree-huggers to make America energy independent, clean our air and water, improve the fuel efficiency of our vehicles, kick-start 21st-century industries, and make our cities safer and more livable. Don't let them get away with it."
- Chip Giller, Founder of Grist.org

And yet, so many of the political right really do believe that global warming is just a ploy.

I don't care how many arguments there are against it, it's still a good idea to clean up our act, don't you think? I've heard excuses ranging from "The sun is getting hotter" to "Last winter was the coldest on record".

That's exactly the point of the quote. Even IF global warming were a hoax, which it's not, the things we need to do to stop pumping so much CO2 into the air will ALSO provide many other benefits. Lower energy use makes things cheaper. Walkable cities, better health, new industries, cleaner water, new technologies to export, the list goes on.

Hey, found you on Truth & Beauty Bombs. Can you believe that I know an Adrian Forsyth, and he's an environmentalist?

Anyway, things like this appearing on a Starbucks cup really do nothing but boost my increasing sense of optimism.

Starbucks has had a declared objective of supporting environmental efforts and such (though they could probably change their practices to do more fairly easily, having worked there). And the quotes thing has quotes of all kinds from all sorts of people on it. There's one by hack extrordinaire, George F. Will about how "true conservatives are happier than liberals, because they're pessimists" which is false on several levels, but most especially because his description of "true conservatives" is pretty much completely wrong.

Also, I would argue that pessimists are inherently unhappy...There's the whole argument of not getting your hopes crushed but still. Bullshit.

I've looked at the webpage on Starbucks' social/environmental policies. My question is, why don't they make a bigger deal about their fair trade and shade grown coffee, especially since it's a growing trend?
