For Fuck's Sake
Nov. 24th, 2006 11:17 amAll this stupid airport security crap doesn't make us safer. And it ends up with total bullshit like Six Imams being kicked off a flight and being interrogated for five hours by police. Because some of them prayed at the airport, and because the gate guard and at least one passenger are ignorant and bed-wettingly afraid of "TEH ARABS!" So not only were six prominent religious scholars kicked off the plane for no reason whatsoever, and then not even put on another plane by US Airways (what?), everybody else on the plane had to sit around for three hours while they got out bomb sniffing dogs and all sorts of crap.
There's a significant percentage of Americans who are STILL ignorant and scared and think every Muslim is out to get the US. Even though lots of Muslims live in the US and are perfectly integrated, but most of the people in the "OHNOES! Muslims!" groups probably never meet any of them. And these same fears and ignorance are aided and abetted by the stupid, other stupid. That's being charitable, I'd say it's more likely these high profile conservative bloggers aren't stupid, which would make them even worse people. These are the kind of people who push the evil programs that spy on everybody and don't make us safer, like the PATRIOT act, or the mess that airport security is, or wars in foreign countries that had nothing to do with 9/11. Either they're scared of "the terrorists" and want to feel like they're safer, with showy things that don't make us safer, or they're exploiting other people's fears that way. And that's the cornerstone of the modern Republican party. Act tough and talk tough and people will think you're tough, even when you're making them less safe.
