I just got a mailer from the Republican National Committee. It's just a single sheet, about the size of a regular sheet of paper. The front says "TAX AND SPEND LIBERALS HAVE A MESSAGE FOR YOU" across the top, though not all in caps. And then the rest of that side is black and white pictures of John Kerry, Howard Dean, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, and Ted Kennedy (I think). Odd choices of pics, Dean has a friendly grin, Pelosi looks kinda awkward, Kerry and Clinton are in the middle of giving speeches, and Ted Kennedy is the only one who looks reproachful or anything. I guess they figure just the MERE SIGHT of these people will send their targets into conniption fits.

Then on the back, in big block letters in what's supposed to look like worn type, yellow on black, it says "SKIP THIS ELECTION!"

And then there's a couple paragraphs citing "Tax and spend Democrats" who "don't want you to vote" because "they know this year's election is going to be very close."

And then there's some more tax scare-mongering, and then a bit about how voting Republican would keep:

"HIllary Clinton can't reduce the child tax credit" Um, the child tax credit is pretty popular among liberals and moderates and Democrats of all stripes, AFAIK.

"Ted Kennedy won't bring back the death tax" The "death tax" is the inheritance tax, and IIRC, it affects less than a thousand estates each year. Total. For the entire country. Only estates worth over like $5 million. Cry me a fucking river.

"Nancy Pelosi won't go on a spending spree with our tax dollars" As opposed to the Republicans, who've gone on a spending spree with money borrowed from China?

"John Kerry can't bring back the marriage penalty" Funny, I don't recall him ever mentioning that. And the "marriage penalty" is just when two people get married and file jointly, their combined incomes push them into a higher tax bracket than they had individually. It's not really any kind of penalty. But I can see arguments being made on making exemptions or not for it by reasonable people. And I don't recall it being on part of any Democratic proposals I've heard.

It's kinda amusing to see the old stereotype being dusted off for another election season, the sad part is there's people out there who'll probably buy it. But the fundamental problem is that yes, taxes are going to have to go up. Because the Republicans, who've had complete control of the government, have tax-cut and spent us into ginormous deficits.
