Minor Things

It always bugs me to buy jewelery as presents for my female relatives. Even when it's what they ask for. It's not that I mind buying it, or that they even don't like it, it just feels so...default. It's kinda giving up. "I couldn't think of anything interesting to get you, so here's some sparkly things."

*GASP*

You doubt the value of shiney things?!

Serously, though, I know what you mean. Even when it's what they want, it does sometimes seem a little impersonal or prefabricated.

Okay, I'm going to speak a woman here, and say that there are a REASON why jewelry and flowers are cliches.

And frankly, it's because women tend to appreciate them. Not all the time, no, and buying either blind is dangerous (oops, that's not a style of jewelry she'll wear, oops, she's allergic to those flowers) but when they're specifically requested?

Just do it.

(Maybe this is why geeks have so much girl trouble.)

Also, I think more men should be given jewelry and flowers, too.

Guys can't really get away with much in the way of jewlery, unless you're going for the Mr. T hundred pounds of gold necklaces and brass knuckles of rings sort of things.

See, though, that's a problem in the culture!

And, really, I suspect men can get away with more than you're thinking. It's just that men's jewelry tends not to be made for flashy display of "This is my woman and this is my wealth." But rather, for actual decoration of the wearer, and thus is understated rather than overstated. But you don't want to hear my little feminist self getting into a rant about the trouble of finding nice women's jewelry.

I did buy it, and she did like it, but I still feel like I should have been able to find something better than just jewlery.
