And someone else will say exactly what you were thinking, often in a better way. Although this is something I did say. Why Conservatives Can't Govern over at the Washington Monthly magazine, is about exactly that. And it's for exactly the reasons I said months ago. Conservatives suck at governing because they think the government's useless and wasteful and going to screw up, so they don't bother to even try and do the job right, since they don't believe in it.

"Government sucks, elect us and we'll prove it!"

What happened to all those "social conservatives" who wanted to abolish the Federal government entirely? No President, No Congress, No Supreme Court, No IRS, No FBI, No ATF, No EPA, and so on.

If they hate the concepts so much, why take the jobs?

Because they figure they can get rid of them, except it turns out they're all popular with the public?

Or because they figure they can use it as a post to reward their cronies (like, oh, Michael Brown) since the post doesn't really matter, who cares if the people doing it are competent or corrupt?

Or because all the "cutting government" talk is just that, and they're really just after power.

Probably some combination of all 3, and some other reasons.
