A Parable, Almost
Nov. 1st, 2005 02:43 amOnce upon a time, after a night of drinking, several initiates had a Brilliant Idea. They decided to teach a monkey Zen. Monkeys were, after all, common in the jungles surrounding the monastery, so why shouldn't they do something useful?
After procuring a monkey through nefarious means involving a banana and a box, they set about instructing it. This went about as well as could be expected for anything involving a group of drunken initiates and a monkey.
This is why avoidance of alcohol is now first vow required of initiates. And also why monkeys point and laugh at humans.
