Aliens are perfect for people to project their own views on. Because they're not around to argue with it. At least not openly.

But y'know, the real reason aliens haven't invaded Earth? Why would they want to? We don't go around invading other countries just because we can. Well, usually. Sure, they probably could blow the crap out of our cities, but what then? Occupy a planet of six billion people? Yeah, right.

So no, all we get, at best, is scientists, alien Peace Corps volunteers, and alien fratboys out joyriding. It's a big universe, they've got lots to do.
