Today, I was flipping through my notebook I carry around, and saw a note I'd scribbled down months ago. All it read was "Ninja v Raptor."

And Today's Dr. McNinja is...

if you set up part of your game so it seems like a test of skill, making half the resolution random is extremely frustrating, and doesn't reward the players for doing well.

In other words, it's a pain in the ass and sucks.

Thank you.

I've seen some weird things in the forest. Not creepy weird, just the kind of slightly off-kilter things that make me suspect I've wandered into somebody more interesting's imagination. There's a chain hanging from one of the trees, one of the kind they used to have on trains as the emergency stop. It's just hanging there, rusted over, waiting to be pulled. Maybe it would stop the world. And then there was the truck that disappeared. It was by the side of the road, then I looked again and it was gone when I briefly looked away. True story.

If you want to buy yourself the fancy Dove ice cream bars as a treat, do it, don't decide halfway through to buy the Klondike bars just because they're on sale. The Klondike bars are not so hot.

It can probably be generalized from just that, but first, backstory! A couple weeks ago, I was playing charioteer for snacks for my game group. We went to 7-11 because it's right nearby. I didn't need anything for me, but I ended up picking up a Dove ice cream bar from the freezer, because the thought struck me I hadn't had an ice cream bar in forever. They didn't have prices on them, of course, and with tax it was more than two bucks, but by then I'd been carrying the thing around for five minutes, and had already latched onto the idea of having the ice cream bar. Which is probably why they don't price them, so by the time you find out how much it is, you've invested enough into it to pull it out and bring it to the counter.

But you know what? It was totally worth it. That thing was delicious. So tonight, when I was coming home and stopped by the supermarket because it's on the way home and I needed to get some gum anyway, I wandered into the ice cream section, and decided to get the Dove bars. I should have gone with the bite-sized pack of 16 thing, same price, same amount of stuff, but handy bite-sized bits. But the package would be like five bucks after tax, so I debated. I don't know why. Inner cheapskate, I guess. And I saw the Klondike bars were on sale and got them and ate one on the way home. And man, their chocolate just... isn't very good. It's got a weird aftertaste, especially. Kinda coffee flavored. I think I would have been better off just going with the store brand ones if I wanted cheap ones, I've had some really good store brand ice cream bars in my days. So now, I'm gonna end up paying extra, because when I go and buy the actual Dove bars, I'll have already blown the money on the not-very-good Klondike bars.

So, if you decide you want something, especially delicious ice cream treats, just get the good ones you want, don't get distracted by saving a little bit of money now and ending up with something not nearly as good.
