Okay, so who wants to bet they try to spin this as "THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS FAILED! SEE! GOVERNMENT SUCKS!" instead of "Hey, people who can't be arsed to do the damn work competently because they hate government shouldn't be in charge of government."

These things always start with a body or a woman. Tonight it was both. Not just any dead woman. I'd known her.

I could smell blood a block away, even over the delicate flowers that scented every breeze. A crowd of gawkers had already formed around the body when I arrived. I shouldered thorough.

I'd already known what waited for me. She lay sprawled where she'd fallen, her robes stained red from the small hole in the center of her chest. No accident, this. I doubted anyone would pay me, but now I had a case. Someone had killed Justice.

(I'm like a week behind, so I thought I'd try something longer in parts, and I'll eventually backdate them as I catch up. I don't know how long this is going to end up being.)

The crowd started shuffling around me. "Move aside, nothing to see here, move along."

Only one person talked like that. "What about the body?" somebody called from deep in the crowd, "Don't see that every day!"

"Shut it Boffo," Nomos said, then paused when he saw me, "You don't belong here," he said.

"You're getting slow, Nomos. What'll people start saying about the Rule of Law when Law's never where he's needed?"

He glared at me and looked down at the body. "This isn't any of your business. We leave it to her successor to sort out. That's the Law."
