A random story
Jan. 22nd, 2005 03:34 pmI was reading a little bit of the Exalted book earlier, which gave me some ideas, which ended up coming out as a little sniplet of a Fors story. It's pretty rough, and probably not much good, or canon, but hey. I wrote something today, and hopefully it's got a few at least amusing bits in it. I should write something "real" soon, though.

Tromping through snow
Jan. 22nd, 2005 05:10 pmIt snowed here today. Not as much as the weathermen predicted, but three or so inches. Might snow more tonight, but I'm not counting on it. So after some sledding on our less than amazing hills, with my sister and my dad, I went for a walk through the woods. And I thought, because it's hard not to think. I saw some tracks, either rabbit or deer, I'm not sure which, I'm a city boy, for all that I live in the country, and they were smudged and half buried under snow. But there's no predators larger than foxes around here, and a fox sure as heck isn't going to take down a deer. Because humans aren't gonna leave wolves or anything around near them, what with all the horses and cows (mostly horses) around here. So that's why there's zillions of deer, and the suburbs must be even worse for deer. For all that, though, I'm not gonna go hunting myself, so I'm not sure if what I'm saying means anything.
Shortly after that train of thought, my tromping led me by the trunk of a dead tree, had to have been ten feet tall. Still standing, like some long-forgotten ziggurat, full of termite tunnels and holes from woodpeckers. It looked like something out of a movie almost, snow piled in a few niches, but mostly bare. Inside though, I'm sure it was warm for the termite queen and her minions. Warmed by bacteria rotting away the wood, so it will eventually fall down and become soil for other trees, assuming it doesn't get paved over or something.
And then I walked down and by the stream, feeling my way across ice covered in a layer of slush covered in a layer of snow, silent, so I could hear any cracks. There were a few, but none that were followed by water pouring up through, so I felt safe, and made it back okay. So here I am writing this, now, after I've warmed up a little bit. My coat and gloves I got for Christmas worked well, kept me warm, and it was warmish anyway, for all that it's snowy and cold out.

I love computers
Jan. 22nd, 2005 05:14 pmFor some reason, Winamp will not play, it just doesn't make any noise then pauses the songs at like 1 second. But not actually pause, just doesn't play, and the timer stops. CDs will play fine, though. I suspect my sound card, since I just got a new one, but I got a Soundblaster, and how is that supposed to be incompatible with anything? Doesn't work even though I've updated the drivers. But sometimes it does, but I have to reboot and see. I love Windows. So maybe I'll try reinstalling Winamp.
Windows has been BSODing, too, which it used to never do. Maybe it's time to reinstall Windows 98, I haven't in a long time. Such a cruddy way to fix things, though.

Guess who else has a blog!
Jan. 22nd, 2005 08:46 pm"Dude, at least YOU didn't see "Batman and Robin" at a special private screening for DC staffers and guest. I'll never forget the moment Batman whipped out the Bat Mastercard, and someone behind me screamed like a lost soul howling its agony from the pit of the damned. It was Denny O'Neil. What a blood-curdling sound THAT was." Peter David
Another writer of comics, he wrote Captain Marvel (the Marvel version) which was really good. And he's written other stuff, but that's all I've read of his.

A realization
Jan. 22nd, 2005 10:22 pmThinking back, I first got on the internet much at all when we got the old 486, with a 14.4 modem and Windows 3.1. This was back around tenth grade, so 1994/95/96ish. TEN YEARS. Holy crudmonkeys. The internet has been a major part of my life for ten years. Wow. I'm not sure what I think of that, but it makes me feel old.
First, for Magic, online, and IRC from that, though I mostly stopped doing that or visiting the IRC magic channels several years ago, probably 2000/2001ish... There's still a few people from then I keep in touch with, though not really regularly. Wow, I feel old.
And, the Internet also seems to have destroyed my memory for dates, as such. Everything just sorta blends, all the Internet stuff is a continuum, not really parsed. The world's changed a lot in that time.
Just wow. I'm not really sure what else to say. I wonder if I dig up the 486, wherever it is, I could find a first date for when I got online. Maybe not. And, well, the first actual time I got online was at a friend's house, who was showing me an IRC magic draft league he was in. I'm gonna go be nostalgic for a bit, via archive.org.
Edit: Looking at Wizards's site, Fallen Empires came out in November 94, so I started playing in late 94, early 95, I forget which. At least a few months before June, since that's when Ice Age came out. So it's been just about ten years, and I got online not too long after getting into Magic. Wow.
