I now have a cell phone, but I'm not entirely sure why. Not in the "How did this get here?" sense, but the "Why'd I get this?" sense. And yet I've been fiddling with it off and on for hours now.

I know the mechanics of how, and why. My parents decided to get my sister a cell phone because she's going off to college. They decided to get one of the plans that gets multiple phones, so they could have one, and has free talk between any phone on that service. Adding a third line was like $15 a month. So I figured, what the hell. Which brings us to now.

And, like most geeks, I'm entranced by shiny new techno toys. As annoying as people who misuse them are. (Seriously, if you're in line to buy something, hang up the phone while talking to the clerk. Sweet monkeys.) I haven't had any real urge to go buy an mp3 player, or a cell phone, but that was more a matter of poverty and responsibility talking, not what I wanted. Since I got an mp3 player as a present at my friend's wedding, I've used it quite a bit. But before, I didn't really need it, and still don't. But it doesn't skip like my CD player has started to, and it lets me carry more music and switch it around more. And so on. And the same with cell phones. I have no real need of one, who's gonna call me? But still, it's shiny, and can do all sorts of neat things. And now that I have it, I will probably find uses for it, and adapt to having it. That's how these things work. How long after I got on the internet did I take it for granted? Not very long, I'm sure.
