Nostalgic Video Games
Apr. 15th, 2005 01:58 amOn my hard drive, I have the midi of the theme song from Quest for Glory 1 and Quest for Glory 3. I'd completely forgotten about them. The midi files, not the games. I was looking for something else and found them, and played them, and man, it brought back memories.
There's a bunch of video games important to my personal history. Usually because friends introduced me to them, but some just because they're really good. Things like Civilization (the original, and the sequels), X-Com, Master of Orion, and Quest for Glory. With the exception of Frecell, those are probably the games I've played the most. Well, on the computer, at least. Other good games, like the Monkey Island series and such, are good, but don't have the same feelings, because I played them more recently, not when I was quite as impressionable.
But yeah. Quest for Glory. Man, those were really good games. They helped influence my sense of humor, my introductions to roleplaying, my ideas of adventures, and, well, what it takes to be a hero. The Famous Adventurer's Correspondence School. Heh. That's where I think I first started playing a thief with any regularity, because in QFG1, if you wanted to have all the skills, you had to start as a thief, then dump your extra points into magic. Yeah, I think that's where I could probably trace a lot of my interest in beating things through wits, or by going around, rather than directly fighting them. But... Man, those were good games. And maybe it's just from that and the other games I played, but I think it lots of ways, sprites can work better than 3D graphics.
But... Yeah. There's not really any point to this, other than me waxing nostalgic about the games. And just recently, I finally found the disk I'd saved my character who played through 1-4 is, now I need to find where our copy of 5 went, so I can actually play it. I never did before, because I wanted to play the character I'd played the first 4 with. *sigh* part of the problem and the reason not many other games are gonna come close is because now I don't play games so much, and I'm more cynical than I used to be. Back when anything from Sierra had to be good. Of course, back then, it was. And all it took was just a little bit of music to bring all this back. GOOD music, too. Good music, good story, good gameplay, good characters... Just all around good games. I wish somebody'd make games more like that again. But few things can live up to the memories we treasure, sometimes not even the things that we treasured. Capturing that feel, the memory version, is hard. But when it works, it works, like with Astro City. But that's comics, and a whole separate post.

Date: 2005-04-18 01:06 pm (UTC)And eh. Even if it wouldn't 'work like before', Betrayal in Antara is still a -quality- game, with a gripping storyline and plenty of amazing things to do (ranging from puzzles to side-quests to fishin'). I never got around to finish it completely (But only because the last cd was scratched by the time I came to it.) and I regret that to this day.
