Okay, I should be fair, probably not all of it, but the most visible and noisy portions of it, and the most common ones.
The people who were down in Florida, putting the hospice where Terri Schiavo's body lay under siege. The pundits and politicians, from Jerry Falwell and the other usual suspects to Tom Delay and George W. Bush, and the bloggers and others. Their philosophy and claims are incoherent and morally bankrupt.
They love grand sweeping phrases, like "the culture of life" or "err on the side of life", but it only matters in two cases for most of them. Abortion, and life support. A vast number support the death penalty, and supported the war in Iraq. The war in Iraq was sold to us on lies, half-truths, and with WMD that didn't exist. The war has cost the lives of tens of thousands, Iraqi and American. Hundreds of thousands have lost their homes, businesses, and livelihoods. And unknown numbers have been arrested, abducted, and yes, tortured. And for this, we've spent billions of dollars. Where was the "culture of life" then? Where were the people "erring on the side of life" for those tens of thousands of people? Where were the outraged protesters who swarmed to Florida and the outraged politicians who grandstanded across the country?
The "pro-life" movement makes a mockery of their claims every time they vote. They voted for George W. Bush, who executed over a hundred people in his time as governor of Texas. Who got up and lied to the country, and refuses to accept or enforce responsibility for the manifold mistakes and did I mention FUCKING TORTURE (not worksafe) and deaths in Iraq. They vote for folks like Tom Delay, whose sins are too many to list here. And the rest of the current Republican party, like Rick Santorum and other bigots. That's who represents their "culture of life".
That's no "culture of life". That's an unhealthy obsession with sex and death, and everything else is relegated to the margins. I know there's some who don't fight what I've said, but I'm talking about the most public faces. The people who want to make morality just about sex, and use it as a club against everyone who's different than them. And these people have power. They have enough power to drag the President out from his vacationing at Crawford, something not even the tsunami managed. That's your compassionate conservative, right there.
