People and statistics

I haven't known what to say about the tsunami in the Pacific. I mean, there's not been anything I can really add, and I'm sure mot everybody who reads this has already seen plenty of links to charities like Direct Relief and so on, so my posting them wouldn't help.

But today, I saw the number had gone up over 100,000 people dead. That's one of those numbers so huge it should just be a statistic... Except, I've seen a hundred thousand people all in the same place before. Back before the war in Iraq, at anti-war protests in DC. There were at least a hundred thousand people at the one, people crowded the Mall for 2/3 the way back, there were enough people to fill all the streets encircling the White House. So, it's not really a completely abstract number to me, but trying to imagine that many people dead...

I... fuck, I dunno. Life isn't fair and not everything happens for a reason, I guess, that's about all I can get out of this, not that that's anything new.
