Quick Facts

All those Republicans in Congress who tell you that government can't run health insurance?

Have health insurance provided by the government.

(Also, they're all rich)

Even if the government didn't step in to run the system itself, we could probably benifet from them taking a more active role in it. Depending, of course, on how they do it.

The key to anything is how it's done. Which is one reason why not to give the decisions about designing government programs to people who think government is the problem and can't possibly work, because they'll have no motivation to prove their ideology wrong by making it work.

The reason government would make a good source of health insurance is it would spread the risk among the largest possible group of people, it'd make sure everybody kept their healthcare when changing jobs etc, it'd get rid of redundant bureaucracy from hundreds of insurance companies, and get rid of the motive to make the most money by denying people coverage and the care they need, since those cost money.

There's plenty of potential problems with it too, but somehow, every other major industrial country has managed it.
