The media the past couple days was filled with headlines touting President Bush's proclaimed "drawdown" in Iraq.

The troops he's declared he's bringing home? They're the "surge", which were planned to come home in Spring of 2008 ANYWAY.

Nothing has changed. The troops are being withdrawn because a) that was the plan all along, and b) To keep them there much longer would mean the army would break. 15 month tours of duty, multiple times, with "stop-loss" keeping people from quitting the army, all of that has gone into keeping troops in Iraq. Some time in 2009 (safely after Bush is out of office, of course) we'll HAVE to start bringing soldiers home.

This whole thing has been an elaborate kabuki theater, designed to stall for time and pretend our troops are doing any good over there. All so we wouldn't leave on Bush's watch, and so that way the withdrawal and any results of it can be blamed on the next president (almost certain to be a Democrat, considering the Republican field is batshit insane). Except for any good results, or even neutral results, which will be credited to our far-sighted decider for invading Iraq in the first place.

It's all smoke and mirrors.  And our lazy corporate media keeps falling for it. Bush isn't changing anything based on success, the troops are staying until next year, because that's how long the generals said they could keep it without totally shattering the army. And so that's how it was planned.  Nothing has changed.

hilzoy, of course, says it better.

The public media press (PBS, NPR) has been drawing historical parallels between Petraeus' report and Westmoreland's "Light at the End of the Tunnel" report in 1967--just before the Tet Offensive.

So if 2008 plays out like 1968--
* The Democratic Party will have a split ticket going into the Convention--and lose the general election
* Barack Obama or John Edwards will be assassinated (wanna place bets?)
* Iraq becomes a meat-grinder and the next President will call on an escalation of the war (and we'll have completely lost by 2012)
* Pakistan will have a change of government (for the worse), and change sides in the War on Terror
* Another summer of race riots
* The economy goes through a chaotic patch, followed by "stagflation"

When the crystal ball is a history book, it's easy to see clearly.

I'm not sure why I even bother being disappointed anymore. I keep trying to hold onto little scraps of optimism and respect for the administration and they just crumble away a bit more every time I turn around.

I gave up any kind of hope for the Bush administration after they happily stole the 2000 election. And then after they turned 9/11 into a political beatstick, and then after it was revealed they had ordered people tortured, and...

No matter how bad you think they are, the Bush administration is worse.

You forgot the last part:

* The Republicans will nominate an actor who will run on "optimism" and leave the country bankrupt and become lionized after his death despite how little he actually had any hand in doing.

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi casualties and thousands of US troop deaths, not to mention the many many more injured on each side, kinda shows them to not give a rat's ass about other people's lives.

So I took that as a given.

You're skipping too far forward. The Republicans nominate an amoral crook whose Secretary of State is also an amoral crook.
