Okay, so I'd like to try switching over to GAIM, since it's open-source and all, but there's no functionality for importing contact lists. Which isn't a problem for things like AIM that have contact lists stored on the server, but I have a huge ICQ contact list built up over a decade. Most of it's gone dead as people moved on and changed and things, but I'd still like to have it there. And it's stored on my computer, not the servers, so GAIM won't automagically download it. Anybody have any suggestions?

That and I still need to feel my way through the quirks of GAIM's interface, and figure out how to make it do what I want. But that's part of using any new program.

I'm pretty sure that ICQ does, actually, store your contact list on a server these days, or can. At least, gaim grabbed both for me when I set it up at work.

Maybe I need to download regular ICQ and load it so it can upload my contact list? I don't think I've used actual ICQ since before they started storing contacts on the server.

I haven't used regular ICQ in years either. Mind, I went with gaim, not whatever you've been using, when I dropped. I think if I were you, I would first check to see if whatever you're using can upload the contact list.

ICQ and AIM merged a while ago - now they're both AIM. I don't know what the migration deal is, though.

I went from ICQ/ MSN and another to GAIM and it imported all my contacts. Get the latest ICQ client and it'll store all your contacts on the server and then move to GAIM.
