The medieval priests and scholars who sat around looking up and correlating all the names of demons and angels and that sort of thing remind me a lot of fans who do the same sort of thing for stuff like Transformers.

Also consider the ones that sat around transcribing the myths and legends of other cultures. There have always been geeks and nerds in the world. In medieval times they were just accorded a bit more respect and got to wear robes.
