If you're in a movie, and anyone ever insists "I know this sounds crazy, but..." believe them. Because if it were really crazy, the writers wouldn't have had them say it.
And if you're writing something? Never have anybody say "I know this sounds crazy, but..." Not only does it not give away the fact it's true, it also makes for better humor when the characters play things entirely straight no matter how crazy they are.
