Nothing was pretty much the same wherever Ferret went. Not light, not dark, not cold, not hot, all just sort of there, with occasional knots of people sitting around not doing anything.
Well, until Ferret found the dirt, anyway. Real dirt, the kind that's been digested by generations of earthworms. But where'd it come from?
Ferret looked up. There was the World, turned inside out to fend everyone off. But no matter what, Ferret couldn't reach the World. Even pretending to ignore it then pouncing didn't work. It was always just the tiniest unbridgeable gap away.
"Hello World," Ferret said.
