They'd said it was stupid to build a dance club in the middle of the desert. And they, whoever "they" were, were right. It was stupid. But it was the kind of stupid that resonated with people, probably because of the sheer stupidity. People would go, just to see that yes, somebody had build a dance club in the middle of the desert. It acquired a mystique of its own, the enigma of its existence providing fertile ground for whatever meaning visitors brought with them.
Which makes it a shame that the ultimate reason it was built was simple stupidity.
