Physical descriptions aren't superficial. How people look isn't even really superficial. It's part of who the person is. It's not ALL of it, but it's the first part you see. It's superficial to judge people on JUST their looks, yes, but paying attention to how people look and act and their motions and such isn't superficial, it's part of face to face communication. But because geeks as a whole tend to be bad at it, as well as somewhat uninterested in other people, in general, it's part we tend to ignore, and denigrate because we're not interested in it. Sort of like saying a TV show or band or sports team sucks because it's not interesting to you or saying some kind of activity sucks because we're no good at it. Lately, for some reason, I've been coming more to appreciate the reasons and the purpose behind much of the "social bullshit" I used to diss.
