Motivation
Aug. 30th, 2005 12:17 pmI think a large part of the problem I had when I went to college the first time was motivation. I wasn't going for any reason, just because, well, that's what you do. Of course, that doesn't change the fact I wish I had a time machine to go back and kick my ass and make me stay in, because of all the opportunities I missed, but that's neither here nor there. And if I had, I probably wouldn't be writing this, or know half the people I do. It wasn't really any one choice though, it was a bunch of built-up decisions and accumulated things.
But one of the things, then, was I thought I sucked at languages. Partly due to having bad teachers for Spanish every time in HS, but I enjoyed the hell out of Latin, because I had a good teacher. So in college, the first time, I tried Russian. And, well, it didn't go very well. It was frustrating and I was just bad at it. Which didn't help the motivation thing.
But right now, I'm taking Arabic, because I have most everything else I need to, except a language, to finish up the Associates Degree stuff and be able to go back to school for real. And so far, it's been interesting, and while I'm not good at it, I don't hate it, and I feel like I'm actually learning stuff. So the only downside is if I do learn it well, I won't be able to listen to music in Arabic as background music, since the words will interrupt my language centers and distract me. On the other hand, I'd know what they're saying, and find out if it's "You don't understand a word we're saying, do you?"
Speaking of which, I have to go do homework and get off to class, then work. I have a bunch of catch-up drabbles to do, don't I?
