I am amused

One of the interesting things of working at B&N is anybody I know tangentially asks me to get books for them. One of the people who works at the store I used to work at asked me to get a book for her. She's basically taken over my job, which is fine, since the people who were supposed to didn't bother to do anything and then left anyway.

But that's not the point. The point is the book she asked me to get her. It's A Stroke of Midnight, by Laurell K. Hamilton. And... I am very amused by the description. Allow me to quote for you.

"I am Meredith Gentry, P.I., solving cases in Los Angeles, far from the peril and deception of my real home–because I am also Princess Meredith, heir to the darkest throne faerie has to offer. The Unseelie Court infuses me with its power. But at what price does such magic come? How much of my human side will I have to give up, and how much of the sinister side of faerie will I have to embrace? To sit on a throne that has ruled through bloodshed and violence for centuries, I might have to become that which I dread the most.

...

The threat will drive us to allow human police into faerie for the first time in our history. I need my allies now more than ever, especially since fate will lead me into the arm of Mistral, Master of Storms, the queen’s new captain of her guard. Our passion will reawaken powers long forgotten among the warriors of the sidhe. Pain and pleasure await me–and danger, as well, for some at that court seek only death."

I bet she has violet eyes, too.

It sounds, frankly, like pornographic fanfic. It's a romance novel, so it's porn, obviously, but the storyline sounds like something you'd expect in some LJ group like Dark_Goth_Faerie_Clan or something. She's probably a better writer than that, at least I hope. But even so.

Okay, so Deep Throat's come out now, got it.

So what the hell is up with the people attacking him? He helped lead to the exposure of the massive corruption that was Nixon's White House. HOW is this a bad thing?

But I suppose, if they didn't think Nixon doing it was bad, that would explain why they don't care about Bush doing the same and worse things. People are completely mental.

Yes, it was a bad, bad, bad, thing that drove a felonious corrupt man from office. Right.

What the FUCK has happened to my country? Have we all lost our minds?

Barnes and Noble sells graphic novels, and TPBs. So sometimes, when I'm on break and just sitting down, as opposed to standing for 8 hours straight, I go grab one, since I can read decently far in them in 15 minutes or so. There's shelves and shelves of manga, and most of the American stuff is Marvel, but there's random other stuff too. One of the random other things I picked up was a Superman book. I like Superman in theory, but he's just so uber it's hard to write him well. I'm more of a Batman guy. But Superman's still like THE archetypical superhero.

But there's times when the metaphysics and underlying assumptions of superhero-dom don't mesh with real life, and then somebody tries to involve current events and it doesn't feel right at all. This was one of those times.

Spoilers, if anybody cares )
