Becoming that Which is Boring
May. 27th, 2005 01:12 amI work at a store that contains a information on the same order of magnitude as the Library of Alexandria did, probably.
This doesn't fulfill me. My job is half computer-to-customer interface, and the rest menial straightening and making sure things didn't get stolen. And let me tell you, working eight hours a day around CDs and DVDs is a great way to illustrate the superficiality of a lot of American culture.
Giving people responsibility and authority to go with it is a good way to corrupt them into caring about whatever bullshit it is you want them to do, because then it'll seem to matter to them, until they realize it's bullshit again. But until then, they'll get little happy feelings for accomplishing the pointless bullshit they're being required to do, because they're doing it "well".
Nearly my entire life rotates around leisure pursuits. My "job" is selling CDs and movies and crap to people, for them to watch. And then I go home and game, or sit on the computer, or write things to...entertain people. I do nothing at all productive with my life. But that's how US society's been built to be, over the past many a year. Go shopping! Buy useless crap! We'll move our factories and research to India, and China, so now we all spend our time selling each other useless crap to distract us from the fact we're not actually doing anything. Drugged in some kind of materialist stupor by the fumes from all the packaging of everything we buy.
Mlarf. I need to actually DO something, above and beyond bitching here to 20some people who already know most of what I'm going to say. The problem is I keep looking at the huge problems and seeing them as that and sighing, rather than finding somewhere small and starting to pick a hole for the dynamite.
