I saw this mentioned over on Websnark and must admit I haven't actually gone to look at the site he mentioned yet, but. A site that does 101 word long stories, daily, as a sort of webcomic. I wonder if I could do something similar with the Fors stories, or with something. The concept appeals to me, in large part because I'm a horrible artist and haven't actually gone around hunting an artist to do comics and stuff with, despite saying I should for years now. Not trying to steal what they do, but trying to use the form for something else, maybe. Do semi-daily microfic things, maybe, some linked some not. It has possibilities, perhaps. If I don't screw it up.

One of the best things about LJ, and the Internet in general, is it's easy to find out about things other people with your interests are interested in, and so discover new things.

One of the pitfalls of LJ and the Internet is it's easier to find out about things other people with your interests are interested in, and so people often don't stray outside already shared interests.

It's seductively easy to just see things from your point of view and others nearby on the Internet and avoid people who you'd disagree with. To get exposed to new things that are already almost like things you already like, rather than things that're new. But I have to wonder. How much of that is different than real life? Most people only generally interact with people they know well. And most people tend to know well their friends, who usually share at least some of their interests, since that's how they met and why they became friends. And it's as easy to find completely new things online, it's just a click away, even if it's outside your normal threads.

Maybe it's not so much a problem new to the Internet as one that the net makes more visible, and enhances, which seems to be the general effect the interne's had on many things, good and bad.

An interesting rant here: http://joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000319.html

Well, interesting for programming geeks, anyway, maybe.

Helps explain bloat and things in software, the people doing the programming generally are just programmers, they don't think in terms of the hardware their stuff needs to run on. Which works out well, sometimes, when things need to run across different platforms, but you need some kind of translator there, and things just get messy. You have to know the basics, otherwise all your fancy knowledge will just break.

You know how there's things you do for years without understanding exactly why? At least not a why that makes anything good as an excuse. Things that are so blindingly obvious you have to wonder why they even asked. Well, now I know what to tell my sister the next time she tries to shame me for being a thief. Any other way, I'd have to play by everybody else's rules. And if you're playing their game by their rules, you're already halfway to losing. One of those things I'd known forever, but never really realized, if that makes any sense.
